Two Titles and a School Record Lead Tartans on First Day of UAA Outdoor Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team is currently in first place after the first day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet is being hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

Junior Jacob Schofel (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) won the hammer throw for the second consecutive year when he tossed the element a career-best 54.38 meters. Sophomore Kenny Sladick (Berea, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) came in second with his own career-best throw of 48.54 meters.

Junior Tommy Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) set a new school record in the pole vault when he cleared 4.66 meters to place second in the event.

Four Tartans finished in the top five of the shot put with Schofel leading the pack with a second-place finish and his second career-best mark of the day at 14.47 meters. Junior David Trzcinski (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) placed third with a mark of 14.34 meters, freshman Julian Nelson (Upper Marlboro, Md./Archbishop Carroll) was fourth with a mark of 14.32 meters, and Sladick was fifth with a mark of 14.12 meters.

In the long jump, senior Don Boyer (Dover Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) earned third place by jumping 6.86 meters while senior Matthew Seifu (Silver Spring, Md./Sidwell Friends) leaped 6.76 meters to place fifth. Both jumps were career bests for the athletes.

In the running events, senior Curtis Watro (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:21.38 and freshman Cam Wilkerson (Fishers, Ind./Saint James) qualified with the top time in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 55.31 seconds.

The 4x800-meter relay of junior Evan Larrick (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), freshman Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan/American School in Japan), sophomore Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va./Oakton), and senior Owen Norley (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) placed second in 7:49.17 while senior Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) took third in the 10,000-meter run in 31:14.74.

The remainder of the meet will take place on Sunday, April 22 with field events kicking off at 10:00 a.m. and running events starting at 11:30 a.m. Team champions shall be crowned around 2:40 p.m. CT.
