Bennett Jr. Wins 100-Meter and 200-Meter Titles at UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team finished second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships which concluded Sunday after two days of action at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The men had three individual wins and a win in the 4x100-meter relay.

Sophomore Marvin Bennett Jr. (Baltimore, Md. / Phillips Exeter Academy) took home individual titles in both the 100-meter and the 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter, Bennett tied the school record with a time of 10.70, and in the 200-meter, the sophomore ran a time of 21.76. Bennett also contributed to the winning 4x100-meter relay team in a time of 42.12 with members freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township), sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies), and freshman Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton).

Bennett's win in the 100-meter dash marked the second win for a Tartan in the event. The other title in the 100-meter dash came in 1991 by Jeff Illian. It also marked the second time a Tartan won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash at the championships when Illian won both events in 1991 as well.

Sophomore Bram Miller (Colgate, Wis. / Kettle Moraine Lutheran) improved on his school record in the discus throw winning the event with 51.79 meters. Sophomore Jimmy Nguyen (San Diego, Calif. / Serra) took sixth in the event with a throw of 39.61 meters. Freshman Noah Castor (Ewing, N.J. / Ewing) placed second in the javelin with a throw of 52.26 meters.

Senior Reed Farber (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) placed second in the high jump clearing 1.99 meters, while sophomore Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) placed fifth with 1.96 meters. Freshman Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) took third in the triple jump with 13.95 meters.

After placing fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, junior Hunter Hartshorne (Ithaca, N.Y. / Ithaca) took fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:15. Junior Josh Kalapos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) finished sixth in the event with a time of 15:23. In the 800-meter senior Isaac Mills (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) placed fifth with a time of 1:55.

In the 1,500-meter junior Evan Yukevich (Tokyo, Japan / American School in Japan) took second with a time of 3:55, while fellow junior Liam Walsh (Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard) took sixth with a time of 3:58. In the 400-meter dash, freshman Heoseph Desir (Montville, N.J. / Montville Township) placed seventh in a time of 50.74. Desir was also a member of the Tartan's 4x400-meter team including Mills, sophomore Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies), and Bennett Jr., which placed fifth.

In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Tyler Waters (Louisville, Colo. / Monarch) placed seventh in a time of 56.85, and sophomore Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) took eighth in 58.29.

The Tartans will continue their post-season competition on Saturday, May 4 at the West Virginia Invitational in Morgantown, West Virginia.
