Tartans Travel North to Marty Goldberg Gator Invite

(MEADVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team competed at the Marty Goldberg Gator Invite on Thursday hosted by Allegheny College.

Senior Michael Cai (Dumont, N.J. / Bergen County Academies) won the 400-meter race with a personal-best time of 49.52. Junior Alex Halkias (Berlin, Conn. / Berlin) won the 200-meter dash in 22.00 and took fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.08.

Sophomore Thomas Rich (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) won the 110-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 15.32. The sophomore also took fifth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.80 meters and seventh in the shot put with a throw of 11.19 meters.

The Tartans finished in the top two spots of the 400-meter hurdles with graduate student Grant Johnson (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) crossing in 54.32 and sophomore Andrew McGovern (Lexington, Mass. / Lexington) in 54.41.

Senior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) won the triple jump after leaping 14.68 meters and took second in the long jump with a jump of 7.09 meters. Senior Varun Narayan (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) placed third in the long jump with a mark of 6.99 meters.

Freshman Cody Breidenbach (Nazareth, Pa. / Nazareth Area) took third in the hammer with a season-best throw of 54.58 meters. Junior Bailey O'Malley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) finished third in the shot put with a throw of 13.91 meters, placed fifth in the hammer with a mark of 48.00 meters and seventh in the discus with a mark of 39.16 meters.

The Tartans will compete at the All-Atlantic Conference Championships on May 18-19.
