Tartans Win Seventh Straight Battle for the Obelisk; Duckworth Breaks Pole Vault Schol Record

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field team won the 15th Annual Battle for the Obelisk over Case Western Reserve University for the seventh straight Obelisk title for the Tartans. The men won the meet 95.5-40.5 and in a combined men's and women's score of 172.5-98. Along with the victory, the Tartans also collected six sweeps throughout the meet and broke two school records.

Top Performances in the Field

  • The Tartans swept the pole vault with sophomore Christian Duckworth placing first with a school record mark of 4.61 meters, followed by freshman Ryan Handron with a mark of 4.37 meters and with freshman Solomon Glavach with a mark of 4.27 meters to take third.
  • The Tartans also swept the weight throw with junior Cody Breidenbach taking first with his first attempt being 16.09 meters. Followed by sophomore Samuel Alligood with a mark of 14.45 meters and finally, senior Bailey O'Malley took third place with a mark of 14.39 meters.
  • Another sweep was taken in the long jump with sophomore Morgan Johnson placing first with a mark of 6.62 meters. Junior Sebastian Sanso placed second with a mark of 6.49 meters and Rich placed third with a mark of 6.41 meters.  
  • Sanso placed first in the high jump with a mark of 1.90 meters, followed by senior Thomas Rich with a mark of 1.85 meters.
  • Junior Luke Blackwell, Johnson and Sanso collected another sweep for the Tartans with Blackwell placing first in the triple jump with a mark of 13.73 meters, then Johnson with a mark of 13.64 meters and followed by Sanso with a mark of 13.48 meters.
  • O'Malley placed first in the shot put with a mark of 15.01 meters.

Top Performances on the Track:

  • The Tartans swept in the 3000-meter run with junior Matthew Coyle placing first with a time of 8:31;26, followed by senior Jacob Hsu in second with a time of 8:38.48 and senior Matthew Porter in third with a time of 8:43.25.
  • Rich placed first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.50.
  • Sophomore Jacob Kelly placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.11.
  • The Tartans also swept the mile run, with junior Colin McLaughlin finishing first in 4.15.58, followed by freshman Matthew Short with a time of 4.17.09, and finally with Eamon Brady taking third with a time of 4.18.41.
  • Senior Leland Davies placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.12.
  • Senior Andrew McGovern finished first with a time of 1.54.78 in the 800-meter run.
  • Senior David Durdaller finished second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:57.74.

The Tartans will travel to Boston University on Friday, February 9 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, which will start at 10:00 a.m. They will then travel to Marshall University for the Marshall Invitational, which will start at 6:30 p.m.
