Gates Receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Carnegie Mellon University senior cross country standout Evan Gates (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) has been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $7,500 for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

Gates was one of 29 male athletes to receive the award for the fall of 2012. Gates has been perfect in the classroom during his time at Carnegie Mellon, carrying a 4.0 GPA in biomedical engineering. In three years on the trails, Gates has competed at the NCAA Championships three times, earning All-America status as a junior and leading the 2012 team to  a 17th-place team finish. He is a three-time All-Region performer and three-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree. In 2011, Gates was named a CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-American for cross country and track and field.

"Evan has been such a consistent and steady performer over his time at Carnegie Mellon," head coach Dario Donatelli said. "I have almost taken for granted the tremendous impact he has made on his teammates and the program during his time here. This is a tremendous honor for him and something he worked hard for and deserves."

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
