Tartans Win Title at Home Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country team brought home the team title at its home invitational on Saturday, October 12 at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pa. Race day was full of sunshine as the clouds parted before the start of the eight kilometer race.

Senior Josh Newby (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led the Tartans charge of two in the top 10 and seven in the top 20 with a second-place finish in a time of 25:47.8. Senior Ken Murphy (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) was next to finish for the Tartans as he was eighth overall in a time of 26.29.1.

After two Carnegie Mellon alumni finished ninth and 10th, the Tartans brought in places 11 through 13 with junior George Degen (Madison, Wis./West) leading the group with a time of 26:35.1. Sophomore Marc-Daniel Julien (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) was behind him Degen in 26:35.6 with sophomore Brian Bollens (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) finishing next in 26:36.7.

Freshman Ryan Archer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian Academy) was sixth for the Tartans and 16th overall in 26:46.4 with junior Josh Antonson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) seventh for the team in 18th place in 26:56.8.

The Tartans will have the next two weekends off as they prepare for the University Athletic Association Championships which will be hosted in Pittsburgh on the team's home course in Schenley Park. The championship is slated to begin at noon on Saturday, November 2.
