Karee, Kiefel, Miller and Sloan Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans

After having a record three Carnegie Mellon University men's cross country and track and field athletes named College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans a season ago, the Tartans topped the record and had four garner the accolade for 2021. Junior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) landed a spot on the Men's Cross Country/Track and Field First Team, seniors Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame), Bram Miller (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) were named to the second team while senior Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) was named to the third team. It marks Karee's third straight appearance on the team after garnering second team recognition a year ago and third team honors after his sophomore campaign.

Seniors Matt Karee (Elmira, N.Y. / Notre Dame), Bram Miller (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) and Matt Sloan (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) along with junior Justin Kiefel (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown STEM Academy) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's track and field and cross country teams have been honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as Men's Cross Country/Track and Field Academic All-District selections. The honor marks the third for Karee and second for Miller.

Although the traditional fall and winter seasons haven’t been on display for Carnegie Mellon University this year, the excellence of the university’s student-athletes is still impacting the entire community. Each winter for the past six years, the CMU Department of Athletics has celebrated its top academic athletes at the Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Celebration during finals week. And while an in-person celebration is on hold for now, the highest-performing junior and senior student-athletes in each undergraduate college and on each team are still being recognized for their academic performance.

A total of 127 Carnegie Mellon University student-athletes were named to the University Athletic Association’s (UAA) All-Academic Recognition list for the fall sports teams, as announced Wednesday, December 2.

Despite not being able to compete this semester, the Carnegie Mellon University Athletics Department paused to celebrate its seniors on Saturday, October 17, as the program recognized the career accomplishments of fall senior student-athletes. Forty-six seniors were recognized from men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. The athletics department hosted a celebration in conjunction with the university’s 2020 Virtual Homecoming.
