Tartans Sweep UAA Softball Athlete of the Week Awards

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Two Carnegie Mellon University softball freshmen earned weekly recognition from the University Athletic Association (UAA) as pitcher and hitter of the week after the team closed the spring trip to Florida with a 4-4 record. Pitcher Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) earned her second straight award while catcher/third baseman Piper Johnson (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) was honored for her offensive performance.

McGee closed the spring trip with a five-inning no-hit shutout that included nine strikeouts, improving her record to 2-1 for the week in 19.0 innings pitched. The right-handed pitcher tallied 24 strikeouts while scattering 12 hits in three complete games with one inning of relief work. Her ERA for the week was 0.74 and brings her season number to 0.55 which leads the UAA among pitchers with more than two appearances. McGee also recorded the first win in school history, the first no-hitter in school history and the first shutout in school history during the week. Additionally, McGee recorded two hits in nine at bats with one RBI.

Johnson aided in the Tartans' 4-4 week with a slugging percentage of .864 and a batting average of .545 that included two home runs and a double. The freshman recorded the first home run in program history when she hit a two-run walk-off homer to defeat SUNY Potsdam, 6-4. She hit her second home run of the week the next day in a 10-0 victory against Eastern Connecticut State University. Additionally, Johnson tallied nine RBIs and stole three bases while scoring six runs. Johnson recorded three multi-hit games and hit safely in all seven game appearances this week to run her hitting streak to eight games.

The Tartans return to action on Tuesday, March 26 when they host Penn State Behrend for a doubleheader at UPMC All-American Park in Trafford, Pennsylvania. The first game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
