Tartans Split First Doubleheader of the Season

(REDLANDS, Calif.) — The Carnegie Mellon University softball team opened the 2024 season with a 1-0 victory and then a 6-3 loss against the University of Redlands (8-2) on Monday, March 4.

Game 1

  • Sophomore Kira Monji scored the first and only run of the game in the top of the first inning.
  • Freshman Maya Bala recorded the RBI with a single to right field to plate Monji who reached second after a hit by sophomore Koko Sagae.
  • Bala finished the game with two hits, as did Monji.
  • Senior Amanda Smith pitched all seven innings, giving up only two hits and striking out six batters to earn the shutout.

Game 2

  • Monji led off the fourth inning with a triple. Sagae brought her home with a groundout to shortstop, cutting the Tartans' deficit in half at 2-1.
  • Freshman Maddy Beall singled to right field to lead off the seventh inning and was immediately replaced by junior Libby Eichberger as a pinch runner.
  • Eichberger stole second and came home on junior Faith Lawrence's single to left, making the score 6-2.
  • With one out, sophomore Kyr Brenneman singled to center, moving Lawrence to second.
  • Lawrence later scored on a single to left field by senior Kiera Boucher and an error by the Redlands' left fielder, making the score 6-3 before Redlands recorded the final out.

Notes

  • Boucher and Monji each collected three hits for the day.
  • Boucher recorded three stolen bases.
  • Monji recorded her sixth career triple.
  • Bala recorded singles in her first two career at bats.
  • Smith now has three career shutouts.
