Tartans Split Action on Final Day of Salisbury Tournament

(SALISBURY, Md) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team continued the Salisbury Tournament with games against King's College and Manhattanville College on Sunday, March 17. The Tartans' loss against King's, 7-6, was followed by a win against Manhattanville, 2-1. The Tartans are now 2-4 for the year.

Against King's

  • King's put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning before the Tarans answered with two in the top of the third.
  • In the top of the third, sophomore Kira Monji and freshman Lindsey Murai scored after sophomore Maya Goodwin doubled to center field.
  • In the top of the fifth, the Tartans tied things up on freshman Jasmine Chao's single to left field, allowing Goodwin and sophomore Koko Sagae to score.
  • King's retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The Tartans again tied the game in the top of the seventh when Goodwin scored from first on a Kiera Boucher double to center field. Boucher later scored on junior Faith Lawrence's single to left field.
  • With the score tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the 7th, King's College scored on a sacrifice fly to end the game, 7-6.

Against Manhattanville  

  • Manhattanville scored in the top of the first inning when an errant pickoff throw by the catcher allowed the runner at second to come home for an unearned run.
  • The Tartans scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sagae reached on a shortstop error. After two outs, Monji was hit by a pitch. Goodwin stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and lined a triple to center, scoring both runners. Boucher flew out to center to end the inning.
  • Tartan pitching and defense kept Manhattanville down, as senior Amanda Smith scattered five hits, with two walks, and a hit batter across seven innings while racking up six strikeouts and one double play.
