Smith, Pucci Are Masterful in the Circle as Tartans Sweep Kenyon

(FOX CHAPEL, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team hosted Kenyon College for a doubleheader at Shady Side Academy Senior School on Gene Deal Field on Saturday, March 23, earning a sweep with 4-1 and 8-1 victories. The Tartans are now 5-5 for the season while the Owls are 10-6.

Game 1

  • Senior Amanda Smith came through with another dominating performance in the circle with 15 strikeouts after striking out 16 batters in her last outing. She scattered three hits and gave up one earned run.
  • Sophomore Kyr Brenneman had two RBIs with a single and a sacrifice fly.
  • Sophomore Maya Goodwin went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. She hit a double and stole two bases.
  • Freshman Maya Bala also had an RBI while freshman Maddy Beall had a single and scored a run.

Game 2

  • Sophomore Haley Pucci earned her first victory of the season by pitching a one-run complete game with a career-high eight strikeouts.
  • The Tartans scored eight runs on four hits with senior Kiera Boucher and freshman Maya Bala collecting two RBIs apiece.
  • Bala was also sharp at third base making two putouts and picking up three assists on ground ball outs.

The Tartans travel to Alliance, Ohio, for a doubleheader with the University of Mount Union (12-1) on Sunday, March 24. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
