Tartans Split Doubleheader at Mount Union

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team traveled to The University of Mount Union for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 24. The Tartans won the first game, 7-4, and lost the second game, 12-4. The Tartans are now 6-6 for the year while Mount Union moves to 13-2.

Game 1

  • In the top of the third, both sophomore Kira Monji and sophomore Koko Sagae homered to start the scoring.
  • Freshman Maddy Beall also recorded an RBI in the top of the third after grounding out to the shortstop, allowing sophomore Maya Goodwin to score after she tripled to right center.
  • Beall and Goodwin both scored in the top of the fifth after freshman Jasmine Chao doubled to left field.
  • The Tartans led 6-0 after Sagae scored in the sixth inning.
  • Mount Union put a run on the board in the sixth before the Tartans made it 7-1 when freshman Allison Li scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Faith Lawrence.
  • Mount Union's seventh-inning rally was cut short after the scored three runs but left a runner on base when senior Amanda Smith struck out Brooklyn Schlabach to end the game.
  • Goodwin finished with four hits in four at bats while Sagae and junior Allie Rome each had three hits.
  • Smith scattered seven hits and recorded seven strikeouts in her fourth straight victory.

Game 2

  • The Tartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two solo home runs by senior Kiera Boucher and Goodwin.
  • After Mount Union scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, Sagae scored in the top of the third when Beall singled to right field.
  • Mount Union countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 3-all.
  • In the top of the fourth, Lawrence singled to the shortstop allowing junior Libby Eichberger to score.
  • Mount Union pulled away with the game when they scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.
