Smith's No-Hitter Highlights Sweep at NYU

(STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University's softball team traveled to New York, New York, to play New York University on Staten Island for its third University Athletic Association (UAA) series of the season. The Tartan topped the Violets, 3-0, in game one on Saturday, April 13 and finished game two with a 17-7 victory in five innings. The Tartans are now 12-10 overall and 6-4 in the UAA while the Violets fall to 5-19 and 0-10.

Game 1

  • Senior Amanda Smith pitched a gem in the circle for the Tartans recording a no-hitter with one walk, that came in the seventh inning, and seven strikeouts.
  • The Tartans scored in the third inning when freshman Jasmine Chao tripled to center field with one out. She came in to score on a wild pitch.
  • CMU added a run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field by sophomore Koko Sagae. Senior Kiera Boucher scored after leading off the inning with a bunt single, advancing to second on a ground out by sophomore Kira Monji, and moving to third after two walks.
  • Freshman Alison Li led off the seventh inning with a double. Junior Libby Eichberger entered to pinch run for Li but was later erased from the bases by an out at the plate.
  • With the bases loaded and two outs, a wild pitch scored freshman Maya Bala who earlier reached on a walk.

Game 2

  • Five CMU hitters recorded at least two hits in the game as the team pounded out 16 hits to score 17 runs.
  • Sagae was 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, recording three RBIs and scoring two runs.
  • Boucher and junior Abbey Reese also had a triple in the game.
  • The Tartans scored six runs off three hits in the top of the first inning.
  • NYU answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • A new pitcher for the Violets in the second inning didn't change much as the Tartans recorded another four hits and four runs. Reese triple and plated Boucher who reached on a bunt single. Sophomore Maya Goodwin followed with an RBI double and a single by Chao scored Goodwin for second.
  • The Tartans added three runs in the top of the third inning after junior Allie Rome led off with a single, Boucher followed with a single, and Sagae tripled to right field. Sagae later scored on a wild pitch.
  • Sagae doubled in another run in the fourth inning before the Tartans added three in the fifth inning.
  • Chao recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning, junior Emma Martin doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch that scored Chao. Martin would then score on a single up the middle by Eichberger.
  • Sophomore Haley Pucci allowed two runs off two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning but was able to get the last out of the game on a fly out to center field to earn the win. Pucci pitched 4.0 innings of relief work to earn her second victory of the season.

Notes

  • The no-hitter for Smith is the first of her career.
  • The shutout for Smith is the second of the season and fourth of her career.
  • Smith is one strikeout from 300 for her career.
