Women’s Basketball Earns Academic Team Honor

When the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced its winners for the 2011-12 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, the Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball was ranked 17th among Division III institutions. The Tartans finished the year with a cumulative grade point average of 3.479.

Phi Beta Kappa welcomed a pair of Tartans earlier this month, as women’s basketball captains Jen Larsen and Alex Hansen were selected to the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate academic honor society. Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, only about 10 percent of colleges and universities in the United States have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

A remarkable turnaround transpired in Skibo Gym this winter, as the Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball team took significant steps toward reclaiming its proud tradition of excellence. The Tartans, who finished 9-16 overall, won seven more games than they did during the 2010-11 season, and defeated 11th-ranked Rochester on February 19 for their first win over a ranked opponent since beating King’s College in January 2003.

After a career year, both in University Athletic Association (UAA) play and overall, Carnegie Mellon women’s basketball junior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) was honored for her efforts by the Association’s coaches on the annual women’s basketball All-Association team. Peel took home first-team honors for the Tartans while senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) and freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) were named to the honorable mention team.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team ended the 2011-12 season falling to Case Western Reserve University 57-43 on Saturday, February 25 in Skibo Gymnasium. The Tartans finish the year with a 9-16 overall mark and 3-11 record in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Spartans finish at 15-10 and 8-6.

The Carnegie Mellon University women’s basketball team ended a 19-game losing streak to the #11 University of Rochester Yellowjackets with a stunning 67-62 victory Sunday afternoon in Skibo Gymnasium. The University Athletic Association victory moves the Tartans record to 9-15, 3-10 while Rochester is now 19-5, 8-5.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team dropped an University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at home Friday night to the Eagles of Emory University, 83-60. Four double-digit scorers for the Tartans was not enough as the Eagles took 31 more shots than the Tartans in the win.

This is the third time this season Peel has received the honor.

The win snapped the Tartans four-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-10, 1-5 UAA, as the Violets are now 9-8, 1-5.
