Tartans Win Big in Big Apple Over New York

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 65-48 victory over the Violets of New York University on Friday, January 27, in the Big Apple.  The win snapped the Tartans four-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-10, 1-5 UAA, as the Violets are now 9-8, 1-5.

Carnegie Mellon started the game on a 10-2 run over the first five minutes thanks to a 5-9 shooting performance. During the opening run, the Tartan defense held NYU to shooting 1-10 from the field.

Halfway through the first half, the Tartans scored nine straight points to claim a 25-9 lead as junior Emily Peel (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) and freshman Gabrielle West (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) accounted for all the points.

Carnegie Mellon's largest lead of the opening session came when senior Alex Hansen (Westlake, Ohio/Lake Ridge Academy) took a pass from senior Jennifer Larsen (Exeter, N.H./Exeter) at the top of the arc and drained the three-point bucket making the score 34-14 with 3:56 remaining.

The Tartans maintained control the rest of the half and took a 38-19 lead into the locker room.  For the half, the Tartans shot 50% to the Violets' 24%.  Peel led all scorers after the first stanza with 10 points, while West had nine after converting a jumper at the buzzer.

The Cardinal and Gray continued to manage the game throughout the second half.  The visitors took a 48-23 lead at the 14-minute mark when sophomore Jacquie Shaw (Portland, Ore./Grant) found Peel on the inbounds pass under the basket and Peel laid it in.

West had the hot hand for the Tartans in the second frame as she connected on back-to-back treys and ended the contest 15 points.  Her two treys put the Tartans on top 55-31 as they went on for the 65-48 victory.

The Tartans shot 41% from the floor for the game and 50% from behind the arc while New York shot 33% and 21% from long range. Peel led the Tartans with 18 points.    Larsen and Shaw ended with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Shaw hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season while freshman Chandler Caufield (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded a career-high five steals.

The Tartans will be back in action, January 29 as they play Brandeis University at 2:00 p.m. in Waltham, Mass.
