Tartans Force Overtime at #9 Johns Hopkins, Fall 3-2

(BALTIMORE, Md.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team forced overtime at #9 Johns Hopkins University, Sunday, September 4 in its second game of the season but the Blue Jays were able to prevail with a 3-2 victory to move their record to 2-0. The Tartans are now 0-2 of the year.

The Blue Jays scored first in the 36th minute when Erica Suter headed home a cross off the goalline from Christina Convey and held a 1-0 lead at the break.

Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) kept the Tartans in the game throughout the first half making five saves and the rest of the team rewarded her for it in the 66th minute by tallying an equalizer.

Freshman Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) found an open net after sophomore Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) was able to cross a pass from the far side that eluded Blue Jay keeper Meredith Maguire. The goal was Reid's first career score as a Tartan.

In the 79th minute, Suter made more happen for the Blue Jays. After slipping a pass by a defender, Alyssa Conti took control and fired a shot high out of the reach of Albi to put the home team up 2-1.

With 49 seconds to play, Venegas found sophomore Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) with a cross. As Contopoulos lost her footing, she was able to poke a shot past Maguire to force overtime.

The Blue Jays pressured from the whistle and scored the game winner 1:23 into extra time. Hannah Kronick scored her third goal of the season when she headed in a cross from the goalline to the back post.

The Tartans will be home for their next contest on Saturday, September 10, when they host Rochester Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m. in the first game of the Radisson Invitational.
