Tartans Win Fourth Straight, Defeat John Carroll 3-0

(GENEVA, Ohio) – Sophomore keeper Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) recorded her second straight shutout as the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team defeated John Carroll University 3-0 on the road Saturday, September 17. The Tartans move to 4-2 on the year, winning their fourth straight, while the Blue Streaks fall to 4-3.

The Tartans struck early when sophomore Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) finished a header after a cross by junior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the sixth minute. Prior to Venegas' goal, Albi made two saves and finished with three for the half.

Carnegie Mellon continued to work the ball around and pressure the Blue Streaks' defense as they earned three corner kicks and forced John Carroll to make three saves during the remainder of the period. Two saves were made against attempts by sophomore Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley).

Senior Elsa Wu (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) wasted little time in the second period to record her third goal of the season when she found the back of the net in the 51st minute.

Twenty-one minutes later, freshman Courtney Brant (Davie, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) tallied her first-career goal after finishing a pass by Magill to give the Tartans a three-goal advantage.

The Tartans got off another four shots to close out the period with two hitting the crossbar as one was blocked by a defender. Albi finished the game with four saves making her last shortly after Brant's goal.

Carnegie Mellon will return home to face Allegheny College on Wednesday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m.
