#12 Washington Outlasts Tartans 3-0

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team fell on the road to #12 Washington University in St. Louis 3-0 on Sunday, October 2, in each team's first University Athletic Association game of the season. The Tartans are now 6-4 on the year while the Bears move to 10-1.

Each team put two shots on goal in the first period and had two corner kicks but the goalkeepers kept the game scoreless.

Washington was able to break through in the 62nd minute when Anna Zambricki beat sophomore Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) with a one-time shot to the far corner after a through ball from Emma Brown. The goal was Zambricki's ninth of the season.

Two minutes before Zambricki scored, sophomore Alex Venegas (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) had a shot saved by Clara Jaques while a shot by junior Brianna Magill (Oak Brook, Ill./Downers Grove North) put a shot high.

Sophomore Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) and senior Elsa Wu (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each had goal-tying attempts saved by Jaques before Jen Reed headed in a corner kick by Lee Ann Felder for the 2-0 Bear advantage in the 70th minute.

The Tartans kept at it with two more shots on goal as freshman Savina Reed (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) had a header saved and Venegas had another attempt knocked away.

The Bears added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Lauren Steimle put in her sixth of the season with a one-timer off a cross by Zambricki.

The Tartans return home for a 1:30 p.m. match against #20 University of Chicago on Sunday, October 9.
