Tartans Top Brandeis on Senior Day

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Following a tough 3-2 loss to New York University, the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team bounced back strong with a victory over Brandeis University, 1-0, Sunday, October 30.  With the victory the Tartans improve to 9-6, (3-3 UAA) while the Judges are now 6-10-2 (0-5-1 UAA).

Despite the score still being deadlocked at zero following the first half, the Tartans were the dominant team.  Carnegie Mellon tallied 14 total shots in the first half but just couldn't get one behind Brandeis' goalkeeper.  The Judges were only able to muster up one shot in the first half on Tartans' sophomore goalkeeper Anna Albi  (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day).

Freshman midfielder Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) scored the lone goal in Sunday's contest.  The first year midfielder's team leading sixth goal of the season would go on to be the game winner in the last home performance for the 2011 seniors.  Her goal was assisted by sophomore defender Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley).  Contopoulos sent in the corner from the right side of the net.  Several players went up for the ball, but Reid's head made the touch to give the Tartans the edge.

Less than a minute after the Carnegie Mellon goal, Albi made a save on a header from Brandeis midfielder Mary Shimko.

The best chance for the Judges, however, came on a wide open shot on net for defender Alec Spivack.  Albi made the save, one of six that she made in her fifth shutout victory of the season.

The Tartans have one more game in the 2011 season, which will be next Saturday, November 5, at Emory University.
