Quiros’ Two Goals Lifts #16 Tartans Over Wooster

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Sophomore Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) scored twice to lead the 16th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over visiting Wooster, Wednesday, September 18.  The win improves the Tartans' record to 4-1-1 while the Fighting Scots move to 4-3.

The first half of play was controlled by the Tartans, but the home team was unable to find the back of the net, as the score was knotted at 0-0 after 45 minutes of action.  In the 18th minute of play, the Tartans had their best scoring opportunity of the half, as senior defender Rachel Contopoulos (Oakland, Calif./Berkeley) placed a corner kick in front of the net that Quiros controlled with her head, but Fighting Scot goalkeeper Elizabeth Clark made one of her two first half saves to keep the game scoreless.

Five minutes into the second half, Quiros' third header of the game found the back of the net.  The sophomore's first goal of the season came off a corner kick by senior defender Brittany Couture (Santa Barbara, Calif.).

Quiros scored her second goal of the game less than six minutes later to make the score 2-0 in the 52nd minute. Once again, the score came off a corner by Couture.

Carnegie Mellon had a chance to extend the lead in the 64th minute, when sophomore midfielder Allison McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) broke through the defense, but Clark made a diving stop to keep the score 2-0.

Senior Anna Albi (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) started in net for the Tartans and played the first 45 minutes while freshman Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) replaced her at halftime and earned her second career win and had one save.

The women's soccer team will return to action Friday, September 20 when it hosts La Roche College at 7:00 p.m.
