Savina Reid Receives Prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Mar. 16 – (INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Carnegie Mellon University senior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. A four-year standout for the women's soccer program, Reid will receive a one-time, nonrenewable grant of $7,500 to be used for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at a university or professional school.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women.

"Savina has achieved at an incredible level both academically and athletically at Carnegie Mellon," said Director of Athletics Josh Centor. "She has helped our women's soccer program become a fixture in the national conversation while being a model student at one of the country's renowned academic institutions. She is truly deserving of this prestigious recognition from the NCAA."

Reid was one of 29 female athletes that received the award for the fall of 2014, and the only recipient from a University Athletic Association institution.  The psychology major carries a 3.73 GPA and has been a research assistant for the department of neurosurgery at New York Medical College, a surgical liaison volunteer at Hospital for Special Surgery and an emergency medical technician trainee at Greenburgh Police Department in New York. While playing in her final season in 2014, Reid served as a teaching assistant in the department of psychology, where she held a weekly recitation class for 25 students.

On the field, Reid turned heads as she closed her career with 26 goals, scoring nine as a sophomore and 11 as a senior. She led the Tartans to three straight NCAA postseason appearances, including the program's first ever, with the team advancing to the quarterfinals in 2012. Carnegie Mellon reached the round of 16 in 2014.

Reid garnered numerous awards throughout her career and capped it with an NSCAA All-America selection as a senior. She was a three-time NSCAA All-Region honoree and four-time All-UAA player, as she led the Tartans in scoring for three seasons.

Reid's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship continues the recognition that Carnegie Mellon student-athletes have received for their academic and athletic success. Last year, men's soccer player Matt Sarett and women's tennis player Katie Cecil were recognized by the NCAA.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
