Tartans Sweep UAA Athlete of the Week Awards

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team swept the weekly awards handed out by the University Athletic Association for women's soccer this week after the team advanced to the NCAA national semifinals with two victories in Wheaton, Illinois. Senior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) was named the UAA Women's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week while freshman Rachel Legg (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke) was named the UAA Women's Soccer Defensive Athlete of the Week, each earning the honor for the first time this season.

Durstewitz led the Tartans in a 3-0 win against 17th-ranked Ohio Northern University in the sectional semifinal of the NCAA tournament. Durstewitz created the first goal with her corner kick, assisted on the second goal and scored the third goal. In the sectional final, which the Tartans tied 0-0 against 19th-ranked St. Thomas but advanced to the national semifinal on PKs, Durstewitz made her penalty attempt as the fourth taker, tying the tally at 3-3.

Legg was instrumental in the Tartans two NCAA victories and advancement to the national semifinal, as the team recorded two shutouts against 17th-ranked Ohio Northern University and 19th-ranked St. Thomas. Legg also recorded the game-winning goal against Ohio Northern when she put in a shot following a corner kick in the 24th minute to give the Tartans a 1-0 lead in the 3-0 win.

The 25th-ranked Tartans continue action in the NCAA tournament against No. 1 Messiah College in the national semifinals on Friday, December 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
