#1 Tartans Open UAA Play with 1-0 Victory at #18 Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) – The top-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a 1-0 victory at No. 18 Brandeis University on Saturday, September 30. The Tartans improve to 11-0 while the Judges drop to 5-1-3.

Inside The Box Score

  • The Tartans fired off 12 shots for the game with seven on goal, while allowing just one on goal by the Judges.
  • Junior Emma Shirzad put in the game's only goal in the 40th minute when she made a run to the 6-yard box and finished a diagonal cross by junior Rachel Martini.
  • Prior to Shirzad's goal, the Tartans put three shots on frame that were all denied by goalkeeper Hannah Bassan.
  • Graduate student Kaitlyn Montague put a shot on goal in the 41st minute but it was also turned away by Bassan.
  • The Tartans had two additional shots on goal in the 57th and 59th minutes.
  • Sophomore Abby O'Connor made a save in the 62nd minute while the other six shots by Judges, all in the second half, were blocked by a defender or off frame.

  • The 11-0 start for the Tartans is the best in program history.
  • The Tartans have nine shutouts this year.
  • Shirzad's goal was the second of the season for the junior, fifth of her career, and first in UAA play.
  • O'Connor now has a record of 9-0 in goal with three shutouts.
