Tartan Women Race to Three Victories in Quad Meet

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming team defeated three opponents at the Carnegie Mellon University Quad Meet on Saturday in Pittsburgh. The Tartans defeated Washington & Lee University 163-94, the University of Rochester 149-108, and completed the sweep with a 168-84 victory over Allegheny College.

The relay team of freshman Debbie Lin (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga), sophomore Tatiana Duchak (Centreville, Va./Mercersburg Academy), sophomore Megan Garvey (West Chester, Pa./Villa Marie Academy), and junior Breanna Stillo (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:51.02. Saturday's meet was the first time these four raced together, but their time was the highest of any Carnegie Mellon foursome in the event this season.

Sophomore Soleil Phan (Irvine, Calif./Beckman) finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.89, a season high for her, and took the top spot for the Tartans. She would also pick up the victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.46, her season's best time.

Carnegie Mellon picked up the sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke. Stillo took the top spot with a time of 1:07.44, a season best for her. Finishing behind her in second place was Duchak in her season-best time of 1:08.29. Completing the sweep for the Tartans was junior Price Kinney (Greenville, S.C./J.L. Mann Academy) who touched in at 1:10.18 taking third place and also putting up a season-high time.

Kinney got a victory for Carnegie Mellon in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.43. Duchak placed second at 2:31.76 for a career-best time giving the Tartans two top-three finishers.

In the 200-yard butterfly, Carnegie Mellon placed first and second on the backs of Garvey and freshman Wendy Liu (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan). Garvey's first-place time of 2:11.65 was her season's best. Liu finished in 2:13.46 for a career-best time and a second-place finish.

The Tartans placed two swimmers in the top three, at first and third, in the 200-yard backstroke. Lin led the way with her career-best time, 2:10.55. Finishing in third place was freshman Kelley Sheehan (Poway, Calif./Poway) at 2:13.57, also a career-best time.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Carnegie Mellon had another two swimmers finish in the top three taking second and third place. Senior Victoria Adams (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) turned in her best performance of the year with a time of 5:18.09. Freshman Kaeli Halbersleben (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) had a career-best time of 5:19.21 for the third-place finish.

The Tartans' swimming team also took second and third in the 100-yard butterfly as Garvey and Sheehan turned in times of 1:00.27 and 1:00.87, respectively. Sheehan's time was her career best in the event.

Carnegie Mellon will return to the pool on December 1 when they travel to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, for the Total Performance Invitational.
