Three Women’s Tennis Players Receive NCAA Individual Invite

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – When the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Committee selected individuals and doubles teams to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, Carnegie Mellon University found three of its athletes on the list.  Seniors Laura Chen (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Courtney Chin (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) were selected to team up in doubles play while Chen along with sophomore Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) will play in the singles competition.

This marks the second straight season that the tandem of Chen and Chin were invited to the championships as a doubles pair, but is the fourth appearance for Chen in doubles competition.  The senior duo bowed out last season in the national semifinals.  Chen is also making her fourth straight appearance in singles.  This is Cecil's first trip to the championships.

Chen and Chin have a 20-8 doubles record, as the tandem were national runners up at the USTA/ITA Division III National Small College Championships in October.   Chen will enter the championships with a singles mark of 15-9 while Cecil will start play with a singles record of 21-4.

The individual championships shall consist of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. The selection of teams and individuals for the championships is based on won-lost record, strength of schedule and eligibility and availability of student-athletes.

The team championship will be held May 21-23, and the singles and doubles championships will be held May 24-26. The finals will be held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.
