Two Make Round of 16 in Singles Play at ITA Regionals

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started action in the 2012 ITA Southeast Regional Championship on Saturday, September 22 in Fredericksburg, Va. at University of Mary Washington. Two women advanced to the round of 16 in singles play while two pairs reached the quarterfinals of doubles action. All play continues Sunday morning.

Freshman Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) was the first Tartan to punch her ticket to the round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-2 opening round win over Paige Weinberg of Mary Washington and a 6-0, 6-2 win over Sloan Prince in the round of 32.

Junior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) started with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shannon Lavery of Dickinson College and then defeated Katie Gordon of Bridgewater College 6-0, 6-0.

Sophomore Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) upended eighth-seeded Alexandra Ferrara 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to win her opening match before falling in the round of 32 to Abby Clark of Johns Hopkins University 6-2, 6-0.

Freshman Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) also won her first match 6-0, 6-1 over Marge Selinger before dropping out 6-2, 6-3 to ninth seeded Meghan Buell of Washington & Lee University.

Martin and Raschke, seeded fifth in the the championship doubles draw won their opening match 8-0 over Karen Montoya and Priscilla Montoya and then faced Lauren Booker and Sara Yousif of Virginia Wesleyan College, defeating the pair 8-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Cecil and Hamstra teamed up to defeat Victoria Foanio and Alyssa Sell 8-2 in the first round. The second seeded pair then defeated Sharon Resnikoff and Amanda vonTaube of Muhlenberg College by an 8-1 score to advance to the quarterfinals.
