Two Tartans Advance to Semifinals of ITA Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – Two Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis players are on the path to the championship at the ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington as they'll be playing in the semifinals after two separate wins Sunday. Freshman Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) and junior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) each won their respective matches to continue the tradition of Tartan singles players vying for the regional title.

Martin took down a pair of Johns Hopkins University players on Saturday to advance to the semifinals where she'll meet another Hopkins player in unseeded sophomore Shannon Herndon. In the round of 16, Martin, seeded ninth, defeated sophomore Stephanie Rettig 6-1, 6-1 before winning in a third-set tiebreaker in the quarterfinals against fourth seeded sophomore Elaine Baik 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(7-2).

Cecil is on the path to meet Martin in the championship after reaching the semifinals with two victories on Sunday. Cecil, seeded second, started the day with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of ninth seeded freshman Sydney Lehman of Johns Hopkins. The junior then took down freshman Mary Elizabeth Shutley of Washington & Lee University 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals where she'll play ninth seeded sophomore Meghan Buell of Washington & Lee on Monday.

Both semifinals matches will be played at 9:00 a.m. Monday morning.

In doubles play Sunday, Martin paired with sophomore Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) to defeat Sallie Griffin and Allison Hupalo of Washington & Lee 8-2 in the quarterfinals before dropping their semifinal match to Buell and Claire Cahill of Washington & Lee 8-6.

It wasn't the first match Buell and Cahill won over a Tartan pair, as the General team defeated Cecil and freshman Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) 8-5 in the quarterfinals.
