Tartans Begin Spring Season with 9-0 Win

(MONROEVILLE, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team began its spring season with a 9-0 win over Division II Slippery Rock University on Sunday evening at The Club in Monroeville, Pa. The Tartans improve to 3-0 on the year while Slippery Rock drops to 2-4.

The Tartans made quick work of doubles play, winning 8-2, 8-2 and 8-1 at the respective one, two and three positions.

Junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won at No. 1 doubles while sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) won by the same 8-2 score at No. 2 doubles. Playing for the first time this year, senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) teamed with freshman Nicolle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-1 win.

In singles play, Pavia and Tsu won by 6-1, 6-1 scores at No. 1 singles and No. 3 singles, respectively, while sophomore Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

The Tartans will play again on Sunday, February 16 when they host Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Division I Robert Morris at The Club in Monroeville. The match versus IUP is set to start at 12:00 p.m. with the Robert Morris match to follow.
