#9 Tartans Runners-Up at 2014 Women’s Tennis ITA Division III National Team Indoor Championship

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) – For the third consecutive season, the Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team competed in the finals of the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Team Indoor Championship on the campus of DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.  On Sunday, the ninth-ranked Tartans played the seventh-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins University and dropped an 8-1 match.  It marked the second straight season that the Blue Jays topped the Tartans for the championship.

The Tartans, who have made the championship match four of the past six years and won the inaugural championship in 2009, dropped their first dual match of the season and are now 7-1 while Johns Hopkins remains unbeaten at 3-0.

After following behind 2-0 in doubles play, the tandem of junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won at No. 1 doubles 9-8 (9-7).  The duo never lead throughout the entire match and then trailed in the tiebreaker 5-4 before winning five of the last seven points to record the Tartans lone team point of the afternoon.  The win for the double team was the seventh straight.

In singles play, Pavia and senior Katie Cecil (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) won the only two sets for Carnegie Mellon.  Pavia won 6-4 in the first set at No. 1 before Amanda Austi won sets two and three by the scores of 6-1, 6-0.  Cecil won her first set at No. 4 by the score of 6-3 over Elaine Baik, but was forced to retire in the second set.

The Tartans and Blue Jays will meet again on March 23 at the University of Mary Washington.  The match is set for 12:00 p.m.
