No. 8 Tartans Close Spring Break with 7-2 Win

(CLAREMONT, Calif.) - The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team closed its spring break tour against top-ranked competition with a 7-2 win over 15th-ranked University of the South on Friday, March 14 moving its overall season record to 10-2.

The team swept doubles play with junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) finishing first with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Lydia Utkin (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) and sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles and junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) got the win at No. 1 doubles, 9-7.

Sophomore Elizabeth Martin (St. Simons Island, Ga./Frederica Academy) and Raschke finished their singles matches around the same time, securing the team win with five points. Martin won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Raschke won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Tsu won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) while Torres won her No. 4 singles match for the Tartans seventh point, 6-3, 7-5.

Overall for the week, the Tartans went 3-1, playing four matches in five days.

The team will return to the court on Saturday, March 22 against University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia at 10:00 a.m.
