Singles Dominate For No. 8 Tartans in Win at No. 21 Mary Washington

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) - The No. 8 Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team used a dominate singles performance to defeat No. 21 University of Mary Washington on Saturday, March 22 at Mary Washington. The Tartans improve to 11-2 overall while the Eagles fall to 5-5.

The Tartans did lead 2-1 after doubles, getting victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs. Junior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) and freshman Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) earned the first point with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles while sophomore Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) held out for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

Tsu was the first to finish singles as she won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles before freshman Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Torres then secured the team victory with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.

Other match wins for the Tartans came from junior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) at No. 6 singles, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-6) and from Pratt at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-7(5-7), 1-0(10-8).

The team will face No. 1 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, March 23 at Mary Washington at 12:00 p.m. in a rematch of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship final.
