Pavia Named Most Valuable Player of UAA; Five Others Named All-UAA and Coaching Staff Honored

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Vanessa Pavia (Thornwood, N.Y./Academy of our Lady of Good Counsel) was named Women's Tennis' Most Valuable Player of the University Athletic Association (UAA) by the tennis coaches of the Association, as announced Thursday, April 30.  Pavia was joined by five other teammates on the All-UAA teams.  Head Coach Andrew Girard and his staff of assistant coaches, Mike Belmonte and Sarah Short, were honored as Women's Coaching Staff of the Year.  

Pavia finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-7 in singles and 16-5 in doubles play and is currently ranked second in the Atlantic South Region in singles.  Pavia's last win at the UAA Championship was over the top seeded Atlantic South player, Beatrice Rosen of Emory University. The sophomore ended the season with four straight victories and won seven of her last eight singles matches including two at the UAA Championship.  Pavia and senior Angela Pratt (Saratoga, Calif./St. Francis) earned second team All-UAA honors at second doubles.  The tandem went 2-1 at the tournament last week.

Carnegie Mellon had its top doubles team garner second team honors.  Senior Bryn Raschke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines) and freshman Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) who are ranked second in the Atlantic South Region in doubles, also put together a 2-1 record last weekend while ending the season with a record of 11-5.   

The Tartans landed three singles players on the second team as well; sophomore Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) at No. 3, junior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) at No. 4 and Sidell at No. 6. Torres has an overall singles mark of 20-6 while posting a 2-1 mark at the UAA Championship. Tsu finished the season 16-6 and won two of her three matches at the championship.  Sidell, also tabbed two of three victories at UAA's and ended the regular season with a 12-10 overall singles record.

The Tartans finished second in the UAA for the third straight season and compiled an overall team record of 15-6. They are currently ranked seventh in Division III and all of their losses have been against nationally ranked top 10 opponents.
