No. 6 Tartans Open ITA National Team Indoor Championship with 8-1 Win

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with an 8-1 win against host DePauw University on Friday, February 26. The sixth-ranked Tartans and number one seed for the tournament are now 7-1 on the season while 14th-ranked DePauw falls to 2-2.

The Tartans started the scoring at third doubles when junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) and senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) defeated Colleen Morris and Megan Galle, 8-2. The second doubles pair of freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) then won, 8-2, before sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) made it a sweep with an 8-6 win at first doubles.

Sidell was the first to finish singles play, as she topped Gretchen Wilder at third singles, 6-1, 6-2. Torres clinched the match with her 6-3, 6-3 win at second singles.

Other wins in singles play came from Tsu, Vizelman and freshman Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School).

The Tartans advance to the semifinals for the seventh time in eight years and will face the winner of Washington and Lee University and Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m.
