Tartans Finish Second at ITA National Team Indoor Championship

(GREENCASTLE, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked sixth in the nation, played in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship match for the fifth consecutive year and dropped a 5-0 decision to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges Sunday, February 28. The Tartans are now 8-2 on the year, while the Sagehens move to 3-1.

Pomona-Pitzer won the first two points of the day with 8-5 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.  At third doubles, Carnegie Mellon's tandem of junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) and senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) forced a tiebreaker before losing 9-8 (7-2), which gave the Sagehens a 3-0 following doubles play.

In singles, the Sagehens won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles in straight sets to seal the victory.

The Tartans will next travel to Claremont, California, for their annual spring break trip.  The team will open play on Saturday, March 5 when they face Westmont College.
