No. 11 Tartans Outlast No. 13 Washington and Lee, 5-4

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 11th in the  nation, faced 13th-ranked Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 26 at the Carnegie Mellon Tennis Courts. The match came down to the last singles court with the Tartans prevailing, 5-4.

The Tartans held a 2-1 lead after doubles. The number two pair of senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) tied the match at 1-1. The home team then took the lead when the number three pair of senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won 8-6 against Emily Kochard and Mary Hampton McNeal.

Freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) was the first to finish singles play as she won 6-3, 6-4 in the fifth position to give the Tartans a 3-1 lead with first, second and sixth singles moving into a third set and the Generals leading by a set on the other two courts.

The Generals picked up victories in third and first singles to tie the match at 3-3 before Torres came-from-behind at second singles to win 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 to give the Tartans a 4-3 advantage.

A moment later, Washington and Lee tied the match again when Emily Kochard defeated sophomore Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at sixth singles.

The fifth point came down to fourth singles with Vizelman forcing a third set against McNeal. Vizelman then outlasted McNeal winning in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).

The Tartans will next face Washington (Md.) College at home on Friday, April 1 at 4:00 p.m.
