No. 11 Tartans Down Shorewomen 9-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 11th nationally, hosted the Shorewomen of Washington College on Friday, April 1. The Tartans defeated the Shorewomen 9-0. The win moves Carnegie Mellon's dual match record to 13-5 while Washington is now 5-2.

Carnegie Mellon opened play with a sweep in doubles. Claiming the first point for the Tartans was the No. 3 tandem of senior Abbey Hamstra (Wheatfield, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) with an 8-1 win.  Senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) won 8-4 at No. 2 while the tandem of sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills) won 8-3 in the No. 1 spot.

Torres won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to put the home squad ahead 4-0.  Tsu clinched the match for the Tartans with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.

Sidell won at No. 3 singles 2-6, 7-5, 10-2, with Vizelman winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Makino and freshman Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) scored points for the Tartans with straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Both won 6-0, 6-0.

The Tartans will be back on the courts Saturday, April 9 when they travel to Johns Hopkins University. The match is set for 3:00 p.m.
