No. 9 Tartans Drop UAA Semifinal to No. 12 Washington U.

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team met 12th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship semifinal on Saturday, April 23 in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Bears pulled out a 6-3 win to advance to the championship final while the Tartans will play for third place on Sunday.

A 2-1 lead after doubles was in the Tartans' favor with wins from the first doubles pair of sophomore Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and freshman Minami Makino (Whittier, Calif./Sunny Hills), 8-6, and the second doubles team of senior Brooke Tsu (Hillsborough, Calif./Burlingame) and freshman Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield), 9-8 (7-4).

WashU took a 3-2 lead with wins at first and third singles before junior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) tied the match at 3-all with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win from the second position.

Four, five and six singles all played to three sets as the Bears mustered wins at all three to beat the Tartans in the semifinals for the first time in the last six attempts.

The Tartans will face 16th-ranked University of Chicago on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the third-place match. The Tartans are 2-3 in the last five matches with Chicago in the UAA tournament dating back to 2006, but defeated the Maroons in each of the last two seasons in the NCAA tournament to advance to the quarterfinals.
