Four Tartans Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Regional; Doubles Tandem Head to Quarterfinals

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team started the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday, September 24. The three-day event is being held on the campus of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Four advanced to the round of 16 in singles play while a doubles team reached the quarterfinals.

Senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South), who is seeded third, won both her matches Saturday afternoon. She began play defeating Lauren Hassell of Washington & Lee in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. In the secodn round of play, Torres was forced to a third set against Kimberly Zou of Johns Hopkins and won 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

A pair of juniors advanced for the Tartans marking the second straight year Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) will play on Sunday. Sidell topped Chrissy Simon of Johns Hopkins, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 before downing Danielle Mirabella of Mary Washington in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Lai was victorious over Caroline Mosberg of Mary Washington 6-4, 6-2 and defeated Julia Gokhberg of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-1.

Sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) turned in two straight victories with the first over Gabrielle Moore of Washington & Lee, 6-1, 6-3, and then shutout Kate Huck of Christopher Newport for her second win of the day.

In doubles play, Torres and Sidell won 8-1 over Junlia Gan and Emily Shutman from Haverford and then downed Julie Lazer and Rachelle Martinez of Washington College, 8-6, to advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.
