Tartans Finish Competition at ITA Regional

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team completed its competition at the USTA-ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday, September 25 with four playing in the quarterfinals of singles. The tournament was held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) won her round of 16 match 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 against Allison Wolters of Franklin & Marshall before having to retire in her quarterfinal match against Sophia Strickland of Johns Hopkins.

Juniors Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) and Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School) each won their round of 16 matches. Sidell topped Hannah Archer of Washington & Lee 7-6, 7-4, 7-5 while Lai won 6-4, 7-5 over Jody Law from Johns Hopkins. In their quarterfinals match, Sidell lost a hard fought match to top seeded Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins 7-6(5), 6-4. Lai dropped a straight set match to Johanna Ranta-aho of Christopher Newport 6-1, 6-1.

Sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) topped fifth-seed Kait Brogan of Mary Washington in the round of 16 in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, before losing a three set match to second-seed Brooke Donnelly of Washington & Lee in the quarterfinals. Vizelman took the first set 6-4 and then fell 6-3 and 6-2 in the second and third sets.
    
In doubles play, Torres and Sidell lost 9-8(2) in their quarterfinal match to Anna Kankanala and Kimberly Zou of Johns Hopkins.
