No. 10 Tartans Advance to Third Round of NCAA Tournament

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team defeated 15th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday, May 13 in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. The match was played inside at the Lansing Chapman Rink in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

For the third time this season the Tartans faced the Eagles with the Tartans (19-7) topping the Eagles (20-6) each time.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the Tartans earning their point at the third position by sophomore Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) and junior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam/St. Andrew's Episcopal School). The pair finished first with an 8-2 win against Caroline Mosberg and Danielle Mirabella.

Junior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) tied the overall match score at two with a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles against Taylor Diffley.

Following Sidell with a win was freshman Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) at fourth singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Vizelman then defeated Rachel Summers at third singles, 6-4, 6-4, before senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South) earned match point against Kait Brogan at first singles, 6-3, 7-5. Torres topped Brogan for the third time this season.

The Tartans advance to the third round or regional championship of the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in school history. Five times the Tartans have won and advanced to the quarterfinals. On Sunday, the Tartans will meet No. 4 Williams at 10 a.m. The Tartans are 0-4 all time against Williams.
