No. 10 Tartans Fall in NCAA Regional Championship to No. 4 Williams

(WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team finished the season in the regional championship of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Sunday, May 14 with a 5-0 loss to host Williams College. The Tartans, ranked 10th in the nation, close the year with a 19-8 record, while the No. 4 Ephs advance to the quarterfinals and have a 17-4 record.

Williams was able to take all three points in doubles play with wins at first and third doubles by 8-3 scores and an 8-5 score at second doubles. It marked just the third time all season the Tartans were swept in doubles competition.

In singles play, Linda Shin of Williams topped freshman Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson), 6-3, 6-2, at fourth singles before Juli Raventos was able to put the match away with a 6-3, 6-2 win at first singles against senior Nicholle Torres (Weston, Fla./Great Neck South).

In each of the 12 years the Tartans have played in the NCAA Tournament they have advanced to the regional championship, winning it on five occasions.

Torres and junior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif./Carlmont) will continue their respective seasons at the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Both will be in the sinlges bracket of 32 players with the draw announced on Wednesday, May 24 as play will begin on Thursday, May 25.
