Tartans Split with DI and DII Opponents to Open Spring Semester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team returned from the winter break to play Division I Duquesne University on Friday, February 3 and Division II Slippery Rock University on Saturday, February 4. The Tartans dropped a 5-2 decision to Duquesne before topping SRU, 6-1, to move to 3-1 for the dual season.

Versus Duquesne

  • The Tartans' points came from sophomore Sarah Yang at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Danna Taylor at third singles, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Versus SRU

  • The Tartans won all but one match on the afternoon, sweeping doubles play to earn the point per Division II scoring.
  • Yang won her second first singles match of the weekend with another 6-2, 6-2 score.
  • Taylor also won her second match of the weekend with a second-position win, 6-3, 6-2.
  • Freshman Divya Venkatarama earned the match point with a three-set win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1, at fourth singles.

Notes

  • Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou paired at first singles to win, 6-3, against Slippery Rock for their 11th victory together for the season.
  • Venkatarama is now 11-2 in singles play for the season.
  • Yang also has 11 singles victories this year and is 11-3 overall.
