#14 Tartans Headed to NCAA Quarterfinals After 5-2 Win Against #32 Kenyon

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team is headed to the quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship for the seventh time in school history and first time since 2019 after a 5-2 victory against 32nd-ranked Kenyon College in the third round on Saturday, May 6.

How it Happened

  • Carnegie Mellon took the first point of the match with an 8-2 win at number one doubles by junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou.
  • In two tight matches at second and third doubles, the Owls captured the wins by 8-5 and 8-6 scores to take a 2-1 team lead.
  • Freshman Anika Joshi earned the first singles point of the match with a 6-1, 6-3 score at sixth singles to tie the overall match.
  • Freshman Divya Venkatarama won her 23rd singles match of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 score at the fifth position to give the Tartans a 3-2 advantage.
  • Shortly after Venkatarama finished, Taylor won at second singles by a 7-5, 6-3 score to put the Tartans within one point of winning the match.
  • Zhou picked up match point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at third singles.

Up Next

The Tartans will travel to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, along with seven other teams for the quarterfinals. The match is set for Sunday, May  14 with the team and time to be determined following the completion of the third round.
