Tartans Begin Competition at UAA Indoor Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team started competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Saturday, February 25. Sophomore Samantha Oleson (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) earned All-UAA honors in the weight throw as twp runners made final heats in three events for Sunday.

Oleson led the charge for the Tartans on Saturday with her third-place finish in the weight throw, recording a mark of 12.65 meters. Sophomore Jan Kim (Clifton, Va./Centreville) also got the Tartans on the board with a sixth-place finish in the same event with a mark of 11.89 meters. Both marks were season-bests for the women.

Sophomore Jacqueline Guevel (Dallas, Texas/The Hockaday School) raced her way to two final events on Sunday. She qualifed third in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.95 seconds and first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.93 seconds.

Freshman Sasha Spalding (Springhill, Fla./Springstead) will run in the final of the 400-meter dash after qualifying with a preliminary time of 59.63, a season best.

The Tartans will have chances to record points in three field events and six running events on Sunday. Competition is set to resume at 10:15 a.m. with the shot put.
