Tartans Win Six Events at Battle for the Obelisk

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team traveled to University Athletic Association competitor Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) for the 9th Annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 30. CWRU retained the obelisk winning by a combined score of 146-126.

The Tartans finished 1-2 in the 60-meter hurdles with junior Sommer Farber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) crossing first in 9.94 with junior Rebecca Fortner (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless) behind her in 10.12.

Sophomore Sarah Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) won the 400-meter dash in 59.37 and took second in the 200-meter dash in 27.58 while freshman Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J./Madison) won the 800-meter run in 2:26.03.

Freshman Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Bishop Montgomery) won the high jump, matching her season-best of 1.60 meters. Fortner placed third in the high jump leaping over 1.50 meters. Freshman Autumn Hair (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) placed first in the long jump with a mark of 4.90 meters and won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 10.17 meters while Allen was third in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 10.09 meters.

Junior Grace Yee (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) cleared 3.20 meters in the pole vault for the second straight week and took second. Freshman Oly Nwankwo (Homestead, Pa./Stevenson) recorded a season-best mark of 10.84 meters in the shot put and placed third.

Junior Jerilyn James (Friendswood, Texas/Clear Brook) placed third in the 60-meter dash in 8.40 while senior Taylor Maggiacomo (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak) was third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:57.09 and senior Kira Ragazzo (Frederick, Md./Urbana) placed second in the 5000-meter run in 19:08.41.

The Tartans will next compete at the Denison University Bob Shannon Invite on Saturday, February 6 at 12:00 p.m.
