Tartans Win Seventh Straight Battle for the Obelisk

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team won the 15th Annual Battle for the Obelisk against Case Western Reserve University with a score of 77-58. The combined men's and women's score of 172.5-98 lifted the Tartans to their seventh straight victory.

Top Performances on the Track:

  • The Tartans swept the 3000-meter run: sophomore Orit Shiang placed first with a time of 10:26.18, followed by junior Lauren May who placed second with a time of 10:46.74 and freshman Ananya Devpura who placed third in a time of 10:52.63.
  • The Tartans also swept the 5000-meter run: junior Alyssa Hoffman placed first with a time of 18:04.04, followed by junior Avery Tompkins in second with a time of 18:13.62 and senior Sophia Zalewski with a time of 18:17.41.
  • Senior Liz Barre placed first in three events on the track: the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.93, the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.94 and the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.36.
  • Sophomore Margaret Ann Healy placed second in the mile run with a time of 5:18.32.
  • Senior Isabella Rhee placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.59.
  • Sophomore Jacqueline Liu placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.98.

Top Performances in the Track:

  • The Tartans swept the long jump event: senior Elizabeth Barre finished first with a mark of 5.48 meters, sophomore Iniyaa Mohanraj finished second with a mark of 5.17 meters and junior Jocelyn Kiefel finished third with a mark of 5.14 meters.
  • Freshman Hazel Buonopane placed second in the pole vault event, with a height of 3.39 meters.
  • Freshman Samantha Lee placed first in the high jump clearing the bar at 1.30 meters and her teammate Zoe King placed second, also with a mark of 1.30 meters.
  • Kiefel also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.05 meters.
  • Junior Taylor Symonette placed second in the shot put event with a mark of 11.50 meters.

The Tartans will travel to Boston University on Friday, February 9 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, which will start at 10:00 a.m. They will then travel to Marshall University for the Marshall Invitational, which will start at 6:30 p.m.
