Q & A with Sophomore Ali Nichols

Sophomore volleyball player Ali Nichols is a two-year letter winner for the Tartans and a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council. Ali has appeared in every match as either a defensive specialist or libero since her arrival at Carnegie Mellon two years ago. Following her first collegiate season, she recorded the third-most digs on the team with 227. This past season, Ali was second on the team with 244 digs. One of the best volleyball players in Carnegie Mellon history, Lisa Leonardo is still a force to be reckoned with on the court. Now 40, the 1993 graduate won a reverse coed doubles tournament in Portland last July, beating a pair of college student-athletes to claim the title.

Senior middle blocker Maddie Rosnick (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury) and sophomore setter Emily Wright (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) of the Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team were named Honorable Mention All-University Athletic Association (UAA) team. This marks the 14th straight season that the Tartans have had at least two members named to the All-UAA team.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team finished seventh at the University Athletic Association Volleyball Championship on Saturday, November 5, at New York University in New York, N.Y. The Tartans opened the tournament against nationally ranked Washington University on Friday.

The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team traveled to Baltimore, Maryland Saturday, October 29 to play a pair of matches at Johns Hopkins University. The Tartans left Maryland splitting the matches with a 3-0 setback to the Blue Jays before defeating the University of Mary Washington 3-1. The Tartans overall record is now 14-13.

The Carnegie Mellon University offense proved to be too much for Frostburg State University in a 3-1 win on Wednesday, October 26, in non-conference volleyball action in Pittsburgh. The Tartans move to 13-12 on the year while the Bobcats drop to 15-17.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team traveled to Huntingdon, Pa., Saturday, October 22 to play the 12th-ranked Eagles of Juniata College. The Tartans fell 3-1 by the scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-20, and 25-14. The loss evens the Tartans' record at 12-12 while the Eagles improve to 21-6.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team competed at the University Athletic Association (UAA) second round robin held at the University of Rochester on Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16. The Tartans dropped matches to the host Yellowjackets, #3 Emory, Case Western Reserve and #16 Chicago to move their record to 12-11 overall and 2-5 in UAA play.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team went 2-1 at the University Athletic Association (UAA) first round robin held at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The Tartans dropped their first match 3-0 to #2 Washington before winning 3-0 and 3-1 against New York University and Brandeis University, respectively. The Cardinal and Gray are now 12-7 on the year and 2-1 in UAA play.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened it's home invitational with two wins Friday, September 23 in Wiegand Gym. The Tartans move to 10-5 on the season as they defeated King's College 3-0 and the University of Scranton 3-1. Freshman Ali Celentano (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) led the offensive charge in the close match with Scranton.

he Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened its quad tournament with a 3-0 win over Adrian College, Friday, September 16. The Tartans won the first two sets by 25-19 scores before winning the third 25-22. Carnegie Mellon is now 6-5 on the season as Adrian drops to 1-8.

The Carnegie Mellon women’s volleyball team traveled to Latrobe, Pa. Tuesday, September 13 and came away with a 3-2 victory over the Bearcats of St. Vincent College. The Tartans even their record at 5-5 while handing the Bearcats their second lost of the season as they are now 7-2.

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team defeated Marietta College 3-0 Wednesday, September 7, in Skibo Gymnasium behind 28 team kills and 10 block assists. The Tartans are now 3-2 on the season while the Pioneers drop to 4-1 after game scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-21.
