Tartans End Season at UAA Championship Tournament

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team finished fifth at the University Athletic Association Volleyball Championship on Saturday, November 3, at Emory University in Atlanta Ga. The Tartans were led by sophomore Ali Celentano's (Mission Viejo, Calif./JSerra Catholic) career weekend as they opened the tournament against Case Western Reserve University on Friday before playing the University of Rochester Saturday morning.

Celentano led the Tartans in a 3-2 setback to Case on Friday, as she recorded 30 kills.  The Tartans won the first set 25-19 before dropping the next two 25-15 and 25-13.  The Tartans didn't go down without a fight winning set four, 25-20, before losing 15-11 in the fifth.  Behind Celentano's monster day, junior Rachel Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron) recorded seven kills.  Freshman setter Emily Lawlis (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) and junior setter Emily Wright (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) combined for 41 of the Tartans 48 assists.  Lawlis had 26 while Wright tallied 15. Sophomore Ali Nichols (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) led the Tartans with 21 digs, as Miller picked up 17.

In the fifth-place game the Tartans defeated Rochester 3-2 by scores of 25-22, 26-28, 29-27, 23-25, 15-9. Celentano topped her career day from Friday with 36 kills on Saturday with a hitting percentage of .368. She also tallied 19 digs defensively. Junior Senna Parsa (Bellevue, Wash./Newport) also had a big game with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .342 as the team hit .267 for the match. Miller was another hitter with double-digit kills as she put down 12 attempts.

Junior Olivia Mora (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) had a big day at the net against Rochester as she had six block assists. Parsa joined in at the net with five block assists. Nichols led the defense with 23 digs as Miller had 12 and Lawlis had 11. Lawlis also had a career-high 32 assists while Wright tallied 29 assists.

The Tartans finish the season with an overall mark of 15-17 and a conference mark of 3-6.
