Tartans Open Season With a Pair of Wins at Mount Union Invitational

(ALLIANCE, Ohio) – Carnegie Mellon University's volleyball team opened its season Friday at the Mount Union Invitational on Alliance, Ohio. The Tartans defeated the Tomcats of Thiel College 3-1 (25-23, 25-11, 15-25, 25-12) to start play before topping the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace University, 3-1 (25-19, 25-18, 12-25, 25-19).

In the win over Thiel, sophomore Laura Reichard (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico / Saint John's School) led the Tartans attack with 11 kills while hitting .478 with classmate Jane Dean (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) tabbing 10 kills. Senior Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills) ended with eight kills. Senior Carrie Stewart (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and junior Olivia Devereux (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Marymount) had two service aces against the Tomcats.

Junior Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas/Coppell) handed out 30 assists and also led the Tartans with 12 digs. Reichard and freshman Abby Chen (Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) each had seven digs in the win. At the net, Beaudoin recorded two block solos and two block assists, as Dean had two block assists.

Beaudoin led the charge in the win over Baldwin Wallace with 19 kills with Dean recording nine. Yan handed out 33 assists. Chen led the Cardinal and Gray with 20 digs. Yan had 14 digs and Reichard finished with 11.

The Tartans will continue play on Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. contest against SUNY Brockport before playing the College of Wooster at 4:00 p.m.
