Tartans Split Action on First Day of UAA Championship Tournament

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Volleyball Championship hosted by Emory University with the opening round quarterfinal match on Friday, November 10. The Tartans dropped a 3-1 match to the University of Chicago before facing the University of Rochester in the consolation round later in the evening and winning 3-1. The Tartans are now 22-8 for the season.

Inside The Box Score Against UChicago

  • The Maroons won both the first and fourth set by 26-24 scores after the Tartans held leads late but couldn't withstand the rallies from UChicago.
  • The Tartans had eight service aces including three by senior Mindee Lai.
  • Sophomore Elizabeth Schlemmer and senior Jane Dean each had 10 kills while sophomore Kai Herchenroether hit .667 in set four with four kills in six attempts.
  • Senior Laura Reichard and junior Abby Chen both had 20 digs to lead the Tartans.
  • Lai recorded her 1,000th career assist in the match with 21 total. 

Inside The Box Score Against Rochester

  • The Tartans took both of the first two sets by seven points or more before dropping the third set by a 25-20 score and winning the fourth, 25-20.
  • Reichard led the attack with 16 kills while Schlemmer collected 11 kills.
  • Lai and freshman Neha Tummala shared the setting duties with Lai dishing out 15 assists and Tummala 16 assists.
  • Reichard also led the defensive effort with 24 digs while Chen had 22.
  • The Tartans had another nine service aces with Schlemmer collecting three.
  • Schlemmer also had four block assists to lead the team at the net.

The Tartans will face ninth-ranked Washington University in St. Louis in the fifth-place match on Saturday, November 11 at 10:00 a.m.
